Yealands Estate ‘Single Vineyard’ Awatere Valley Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 18-Feb-2013
Mainly clone 777 from ‘Block 51' on the ‘Seaview' vineyard, given a cold soak, fermented to 13.5% alc. 50% pressed to barrel, of which 20% aged in new French barriques. The remaining 50% going to tank. Dark ruby-red colour with good depth and youthful purple hues. This is tight and elegantly concentrated on bouquet with aromas of bright dark cherry fruit and raspberry liqueur, along with dark herbal notes, along with flinty, earthy reductive elements. With breathing, the reduction dissipates, and perfumes and oak spice emerge. Medium-bodied, vibrant dark red berry fruit flavours and red florals form an elegant core. The minerally, earthy flavours are in the background and the fruit is supported by fine-grained tannins and lively, lacy acidity. The mouthfeel is fresh and bright and the fine textures carry the flavours to affine, sustained finish. This is a fine textured and bright fruited Pinot Noir, marked a little by reduction at present. It should develop richness and more complex savoury flavours over the next 5-6 years. 17.5/20 Feb 2013 RRP $26.95
