Hand-picked fruit from a south-west facing section of the ‘Mahana’ vineyard, WBP and indigenous yeast fermented over 4 months in old 500 L puncheons to 13.5% alc. and 2 g/L rs, the wine undergoing batonnage a further 8 months. Brilliant, full straw-yellow colour with some golden hues, lighter on rim. The bouquet is elegant and refined, but penetrating with intensity of white stonefruits harmoniously interwoven with subtle flinty notes, minerals, spices and nutty barrel-ferment notes. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, subtle, layered flavours of stonefruits, smoke and nuts grow in richness and sweetness. The palate is soft and creamy in texture, enhancing the fruit presence and detail. A very fine phenolic line and balanced acidity carries the spicy, nutty flavours to a sustained and weighty, dry finish. This is a harmonious dry, well-weighted Pinot Gris with subtle barrel work which grows in richness and texture. Serve with most first courses over the next 4+ years.
