Wild Rock ‘Gravel Pit Red”Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 15-Apr-2011
73% Merlot, 23% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Gimblett Gravels' vineyard, fermented to 13.6% alc., then aged 18 months in 18% new French oak barriques. This has a dark, deep, purple hued ruby-red colour, youthful and vibrant in appearance. The bouquet is full, with intense, ripe, dark plum and boysenberry fruit aromas, lifted with black fruit jam and spices. Medium-weighted, the plum and boysenberry flavours are up-front and accessible and backed by supple, but tight tannins. A little shy through the mid-palate, there is good, liveliness from the fruit sweetness and acidity which is carried on the long, nuanced finish. Enjoyable now, this will develop over the next 4-6 years. Match with pizza, pasta and lamb dishes, and Middle Eastern cuisine. 17.5+/20 Apr 2011 RRP $24.95
