Waitapu Estate ‘Reef View’ Northland Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 01-Mar-2016
Dark, moderately deep ruby-red colour with lighter garnet hues on the rim. The nose is soft and gently full with aromas of savoury dark-red berry fruit along with an amalgam of earth and spices, subtle notes of white and black pepper, and game, that build in intensity with aeration. Medium-bodied, the flavours of savoury red berry fruits are light, but upfront and show with freshness, sweetness and juiciness. The fruit unfolds layers of spices, earth and pepper from a soft, rounded core, which is framed by balanced, modest extraction. Fresh acidity enlivens the mouthfeel and the wine follows a grainy textured line leading to a lively, sweet-fruited finish. This is a light, up-front, savoury red-fruited Syrah with a lively, grainy mouthfeel. Match with tapas and Middle Eastern fare over the next 2-3 years. 100% Syrah fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 2 y.o. French oak. 16.0/20 Mar 2016 RRP $28.95
