Second crop from the ‘Waitapu' site near Ahipara, Northland. Five Syrah clones including MS, 470, Grippat A and Chave, fermented to 13.1% alc., the wine aged 12 months in new and seasoned French oak. Very dark, full, black-ruby red colour, this has a soft, full bouquet of dark plums and berry fruit interwoven with cedary oak that has the upper hand. Medium-full bodied, this is ripe with liquorice, plum, cedar and chocolate flavours, along with some gamey nuances, underscored by fine, grainy tannins that run the length of the palate. The acidity is elevated and contributes a firmness as well as raciness to the mouthfeel, and the wine finishes dry. An attractive, fine textured, smooth and cedary, oaky flavoured wine to match Middle Eastern fare over the next 3-4 years. 16.0+/20 Dec 2011 RRP $28.95
