Waitapu Estate ‘Reef Point’ Pinotage 2010

Pinotage from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 13-Apr-2012
The fourth crop of Pinotage from the ‘Waitapu' vineyard, fermented to 13.5% alc, the wine aged 12 months in 20% new French oak barrels. Very full, dark, near saturated purple-red colour. The bouquet is full, solid and dense with ripe black berry fruits, chocolate, iron-earth and game-like aromas. Full-bodied, this is densely concentrated with flavours of black fruits, spices and liquorice, with earthy, funky game and meat notes. The palate is marked by serious, dominating extraction, the tannins firm, bold and drying. There is an underlying fruit sweetness and good levels of acidity for tension and drive which carries to the smoky, spicy finish. This is a powerful wine with considerable tannic structure that controls the palate, and funky brettanomyces complexities. Essential to match with slow-cooked game meat dishes and the like over the next 5-8 years. 5 barrels made. 16.0/20 Apr 2012 RRP $28.95
