Waitapu Estate ‘Quail Run’ Cabernet Franc/Syrah 2010

Blended Red from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 13-Apr-2012
50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Syrah, the third crop of the estate vines, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. The Cabernet Franc vines line the driveway where quails run away from cars. Moderately deep ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has a fresh and voluminous nose of cool redcurrant fruit with herbs and red floral perfumes, white pepper and spice, and a subtle layer of funky game. Medium-full bodied, there are flavours of inky black fruits with spicy, peppery Syrah fruit, and subtle earthy game forming a good core. The palate carries excellent, lively acidity and fine-grained tannins that carry through to a long, crisp and lacy finish with liquorice and spice nuance. This is a fresh fruited red showing peppery Syrah fruit and complexing funky animal notes from brettanomyces. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern duck dishes over the next 4-5 years. 2 barrels made. 17.5-/20 Apr 2012 RRP $28.95
