Wairau River ‘Reserve’ Marlborough Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 22-May-2016
Very full, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is full and rich with well-packed, solid aromas of ripe blackberry fruit and black plums, infused with black pepper, liquorice and spices, revealing black and violet florals and nuance of white pepper. Medium-full bodied, the palate is softly mouthfilling with moderately rich and rounded flavours of ripe blackberry fruit alongside black plums, liquorice and black pepper. The mouthfeel is rounded, with growing presence of extraction and grip providing structure and weight. The palate is underlined by fine acidity, lending good energy, and the wine carries to a dry-textured, gentle black-fruited finish. This is a full, soft and moderately rich Syrah with black fruit and black pepper, and a grainy structure. Match with lamb, beef, venison and semi-hard cheeses over the next 5-6 years. Hand-picked fruit from Sam Rose’s vineyard, fermented with some whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 18.0/20 May 2016 RRP $40.00
