Wairau River ‘Reserve’ Marlborough Chardonnay 2015

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 22-May-2016
Brilliant, pale straw-yellow colour with green hues. The nose is fine in concentration and intensity with firmly bound aromas of fresh and ripe citrus fruits, white and yellow stonefruits and lifted, nutty oak. Orange peel elements are present and are melded with creamy and nutty barrel-ferment nuances, unfolding toasty new oak, and lemon curd MLF detail. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of ripe citrus fruits and yellow stonefruits are stylishly restrained, but the mouthfeel has generosity, presence and power, with some alcohol drive adding to the weight. This is creamy in texture with harmoniously interwoven barrel-ferment and MLF layers, and the palate unfolds exotic toasty oak elements as it flows. A little textural grip and fresh, cutting acidity provides linearity and the wine carries to a long finish of citrus fruit and nutty, toasty oak. This is a rich and powerful Chardonnay with an initially reserve expression, that opens to show complex citrus fruit, nutty, toasty oak and creamy complexities. Match with roasted seafood, poultry and pork over the next 5 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Home’ block and Sam Rose’s vineyard, WBP and fermented in new and second-fill French oak, one-third by indigenous yeasts to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 25% new French barriques with 100% MLF. 18.5/20 May 2016 RRP $30.00
