Wairau River Marlborough Merlot 2014

Merlot from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 13-May-2015
Fruit from Sam Rose’s vineyard given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 9 months in French oak barriques. Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with light purple on the rim. This has a firm and deep nose of redcurrants and red plums with cooler-spectrum currant, mint and herb notes harmoniously intermixed, opening to reveal some pencilly oak with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate features a softly concentrated heart of redcurrants, plums and herbs, the fruit expressed with good sweetness. The fruit is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and supported by fine-grained, supple and discreet tannins, lending a harmonious mouthfeel and positive flow. The wine carries to a smooth, dry finish with herbal elements. This is a smooth and harmonious Merlot with cooler-spectrum red currant, plum and herb flavours. Serve with beef salad and Mediterranean fare over the next 4 years. 16.5+/20 May 2015 RRP $20.00
