Waimea Estates Nelson Pinot Gris 2012

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Nelson
Review Date : 06-May-2013
Brilliant straw-yellow colour with pale green-gold hues. This has an elegantly presented nose that grows in layers and volume showing pure aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits lifted with complexing notes of minerals, honeysuckle and spices. The bouquet has an array of detail and nuance. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the flavours of white and yellow stonefruits form an elegantly rich core. Gentle layers of interest unfold, with minerals, honey, exotic florals and spices. The fruit is supported by fresh, lacy acidity that provides excellent tension and line, and the flavours are carried to a very long, lingering finish of stonefruits, honeysuckle and minerals. This is an off-dry, fresh and lively Pinot Gris with subtle richness and weight. Serve with Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine over the next 4+ years. Fruit from three parcels from the Waimea Plains, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 13.5% alc. and 8.2 g/L rs, the wine undergoing batonnage. 18.5-/20 May 2013 RRP $23.00 47% ‘Bridge' 41% ‘Hunter' and 12% ‘Packhouse' vineyard fruit, all from the Waimea Plains, stainless-steel fermented to 13.5% alc. and 8.2 g/L rs, the wine undergoing batonnage. Bright straw-yellow colour with slight golden hues, pale on rim. This has a soft and gently full nose with a concentrated aromatic array showing pear fruit, lifted esters and honeysuckle notes, spicy florals and delicate flinty lees. Off-dry to taste, the flavours of pears, honey and spices are restrained, and still tightly bound, forming a good core and firm palate line with a suggestion of unctuousness. This has a bright, lively mouthfeel from fresh acidity which provides an elegance of proportion and carries the spicy flavours to a sustained and lingering finish. This is a youthful, off-dry Pinot Gris with subtle exotic flavours and a suggestion of richness that will develop over the next 3-4+ years. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern fare. 18.0+/20 Feb 2013 RRP $20.00
