Waimea Estates Nelson Gruner Veltliner 2012

Gruner Veltliner from New Zealand - Nelson
Review Date : 06-May-2013
The third harvest of Gruner Veltliner from the ‘Railway Reserve’ section of the ‘Annabrook’ vineyard, cool-fermented in tank to 13.5% alc. and 4 g/L rs, the wine given a short period on lees. Full straw-yellow colour with light hints of gold. This has a concentrated nose of yellow stonefruits infused with fennel-like aromas, herbs and minerals. The expression is pure with a deep core, and opens with building volume in the glass. Dry to taste, well-defined and lush flavours of herbs and white pepper are enhanced by stonefruit notes. The textures are waxy and near-unctuous, and provide good palate weight and mouthfeel. The phenolics are well-managed, with a fine linear thread balanced by lacy, slippery acidity. A little positive alcoholic drive is noticeable, and this contributes in carrying the flavours effortlessly to a dry, lingering finish. This is a well-defined Gruner Veltliner with clear fruit, good mouthfeel and presence. Match with seafood and poultry over the next 3-4 years. 18.0-/20 May 2013 RRP $25.00 Third crop fruit, stainless-steel fermented 13.5% alc and 4 g/L rs, the wine given lees contact. Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The bouquet is full and bright with a soft, aromatic melange of esters, fresh herbs, pepper and notes of spice, the nose showing good depth and presence. Dry to taste, flavours of yellow florals show with depth and the palate is one of weight and presence. A little phenolic grip forms the structure, with good acidity in support, and the fruit richness present providing a waxy balance to the mouthfeel. The fruit is carried to a moderately long finish. This is a well-structured and textural wine. 17.5-/20 Feb 2013
