Waimea Estates Nelson Gruner Veltliner 2010

Gruner Veltliner from New Zealand - Nelson
Review Date : 02-Mar-2011
This wine joins the growing ranks of Gruner Veltliner emerging in this country and is Waimea Estates' first crop release from the stony soiled Railway Reserve vineyard. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and cool-fermented with light solids to 13.5% alc. and 1.3 g/L rs. 43 cases were made. Bright pale straw-yellow in colour, this has a fresh but soft, voluminous bouquet of ripe yellow capsicums and herbs with good depth. Dry on palate, this is a well-weighted wine with presence and rich textures underlying soft, quite subtle, but sweetly ripe gooseberryish fruit. A little alcohol is noticeable, but the wine finishes with clean, crisp, subtly nuanced flavours. The weight and texture of this wine is classical food-friendly Gruner Veltliner. Drink over the next 2-3 years. 17.5+/20 Jan 2011 RRP $21.90
