The second bottling of this wine made by Goldwater. A blend of 2008 and 2009 vintages. Waiheke Island fruit, 67% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec, fermented to 13.0% alc. Identified by Lot No. L7908. Moderately deep, dark ruby-red colour, the bouquet is softly full with aromas of ripe dark red plums and red berry fruit, with nuances of cedar and earth emerging, the nose lifted by a little volatility. Medium-bodied, this has full flavours of savoury red plum fruits with cedar and chocolate, along with some earthy interest, all framed by a structure based on supple, fairly fine-textured tannins and soft acidity. This is a harmonious and balanced red with accessible fruit and sufficient grip to match pasta, pork and most red meat dishes over the next 3-4+ years. Compared with the first bottling, this seems a little more fruit expressive, with riper flavours, and less marked by volatility, making it a better wine. 16.5/20 Dec 2011 RRP $11.95 Bright ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter on edge with some garnet. The nose shows light, but sweet red berry fruits and dark plums, with cedar and dried herb aromas, lifted by a some volatility. Medium-bodied, sweet, lush, dark berry fruit flavours feature with some herbal elements. The palate has lively acidity and is underlined by light, but fine-grained tannins. Though in the cooler end of the spectrum, the overt and bright fruitiness provides plenty of vinosity and good substance. Serve with pizza, pasta and barbecued red meat over the next 3-4 years.
