Villa Maria ‘Single Vineyard Ihumatao’ Auckland Chardonnay 2010

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 25-Oct-2011
Bright, very pale straw colour with light green hues on a pale rim, this has a soft, full and broad nose with layers of aromas that open up in the glass. Yellow stonefruits, nectarines, smoky, toasty oak and complex flinty reduction elements all intermingle and bloom. Full-bodied, this has a round, mouthfilling palate with ripe, sweet flavours of nectarines, tropical fruits and complex sulphides spiced with toasty oak. There is considerable density and concentration, the wine being one of real power. Excellent acidity provides balance and cut, enlivening the long, sustained nutty, toasty finish. 43% clone 15 and 95, with 14% Mendoza fruit from the ‘Ihumatao' site, Manukau, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., 86% by wild yeasts. The wine was aged 10 months in 35% new French barriques, with partial MLF. A superb, fulsome wine to match with seafood chowder, roasted chicken and pork over the next 5-6+ years. 19.5-/20 Oct 2011 RRP $36.99
