Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 28-May-2014
45% Mendoza, 30% clone 15, 15% clone 95 and 10% clone 548, the fruit from 35% ‘Lyons’, 32% ‘Te Awa’, 28% ‘Waikahu’ and 5% ‘Keltern’, all WBP and barrel fermented with 40% indigenous yeasts to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in one-third new French oak the wine undergoing batonnage and 100% MLF. Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The nose is full, soft and reserved, revealing ripe stonefruit, grapefruit and subtle tropical fruit aromas lifted with delicate oak vanillins. With aeration, the aromatics build in depth and breadth, showing harmoniously interwoven detail. Medium-full bodied, softly expressed flavours of sweetly ripe yellow stonefruits, peaches and lifted tropical fruits are smoothly melded with vanilla-like oak and toasted nuts. The mouthfeel is creamy and lush, but the palate follows a positive, fine-textured line, guided by alcohol power and drive with underlying ripe acidity. Refreshing, steely, citrus fruit and nutty nuances are carried to a concentrated long finish. This is a harmonious, weighty and softly concentrated Chardonnay with gentle layers of complexity. Match with pork, veal and poultry over the next 4-5+ years. 19.0-/20 May 2014 RRP $31.99
