Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2010

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Dec-2011
100% Syrah, 94% from ‘Twyford' and 6% from ‘Omahu' in the Gimblett Gravels, fully destemmed and fermented to 14.5% alc., spending 4-6 weeks on skins. The wine was aged 17 months in 60% new French oak. Brilliant black-red colour with purple hues, opaque and full. This has an elegantly proportioned nose with very ripe black fruits, quite densely packed and concentrated. Black berry fruits, plums black pepper and spices show, with layers of dark raspberry fruit, anise and liquorice emerging in the glass. Full-bodied with excellent depth and density, this has mouthfilling, ripe flavours of black berries and plums with distinctive iron and earth notes, characteristic of the Gimblett Gravels. Oaking is sensitive and fully integrated with the fruit. This is seriously structured with very firm, but fine and powdery tannins lining the palate. Well-ripened and with moderate acidity, the dense and brooding palate has a softness and refined expression. This is a sophisticated wine with the fruit depth and extraction to enable cellaring 8-10+ years over which time it will develop complexity. Serve with beef, lamb, and game red meat dishes. 19.0/20 Dec 2011 RRP $59.99
