Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 22-Mar-2012
Very full, saturated black-red colour. This has a very full, intense and beautifully proportioned bouquet showing polished ripe dark plum fruit aromas with tobacco, fruit cake, earth and delicate nuances of dried herbs, lifted with spicy new oak. The aromatics are interwoven and harmoniously presented. Medium-full bodied, the palate is very fine and intensely packed with plush, ripe black berry and plum flavours, along with oak spices and waves of sweet fruit flavours lifted with floral and liquorice. Excellent acid poise and velvety, refined tannins make this seamlessly rich. The flavours blossom on the finish with lifted and savoury spice notes. This is perfectly balanced with superbly rich and fine fruit, and great finesse. Match with fine lamb and beef dishes over the next 8-12+ years. 100% Merlot from 58% ‘Omahu' and 42% ‘Twyford' vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., with 4-5 weeks on skins, the wine aged 18 months in 55% new French oak. 20.0/20 Mar 2012 RRP $49.00
