Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Malbec 2009

Malbec from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 02-Aug-2011
Very dark, deep, near impenetrable, purple-red colour, this has a very intense, fulsome nose of densely-packed, blackberry and boysenberry fruits, complexed by dark spices and earthy, black-ink notes. A powerful, full-bodied wine, this is solidly concentrated on palate with mouthfilling flavours of black and dark red berry fruits, dark plums and nuances of liquorice, exotic spices and tar. The flavours are underlined by ripe, fine-grained tannins which provide a firm, near-robust structure. Soft acidity enables accessibility and a long, lifted, violetty, floral finish. 100% Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 20 months in all French oak, 65% new. Serve this powerful, concentrated and exotic red with rich, textured game meat over the next 8-10+ years. 19.0/20 Aug 2011 RRP $59.99
