Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Grenache 2007

Grenache from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 02-Aug-2011
86% Grenache, 7.5% Syrah and 6.5% Malbec, from a 1 ha site in the company's ‘Ngakirikiri' vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 35% new French oak barriques. Bright, purple-hued, ruby-red colour, moderately deep, this is youthful in appearance. The bouquet is attractively ripe and gentle expressed, with sweet, dark raspberry aromas lifted with some oak and with savoury cedar-like nuances. A medium-full bodied wine, this shows rich, lush and juicy, ripe raspberry fruit flavours lifted with red florals and black pepper, along with sweet hints of cedar adding interest. The fruit is concentrated and supported by fine, restrained tannins which allow the fruit sweetness to blossom on the finish. This has a surprising ‘Spanish feel', which should make it a match with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean pork and lamb dishes over the next 5-7+ years. 18.5/20 Aug 2011 RRP $59.99
