Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2012

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 30-Jul-2014
88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot from the Gimblett Gravels, 61% ‘Twyford’ 32% ‘Ngakirikiri’ and 7% Omahu Gravels’, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 48% new French oak barrels. Very full, black-red colour with purple hues, near impenetrable. The bouquet is elegantly proportioned with densely packed aromas of ripe blackcurrants, dark red plums, earth and minerals, revealing black olive, cassis, fennel and liquorice complexities. Medium-full bodied, concentrated flavours of blackcurrants, fennel herb and cassis form a deep core with plenty of drive and linearity. The oaking is integrated and adds sweet nuances to the fruit depth. Soft acidity and very fine-grained tannin extraction lend a roundness and smooth flow to the mouthfeel, and the wine carries to a very long and sustained finish of blackcurrants and dark herbs. This is an elegant, but deeply concentrated, fine-grained Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine with excellent length. Match with roast lamb over the next 6-8 years. 18.5-/20 Jul 2014 RRP $50.00
