Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Hawke’s Bay Viognier 2014

Viognier from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 29-Dec-2014
Bright, light straw-yellow colour with slight lemon-green hues, pale on edge. The nose is firmly packed with intense aromas of white peach, apricots, exotic florals and herbs, with complexing mineral and smoky detail. The aromatics build in depth to show a completeness in expression. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has good depth and density, the flavours initially restrained, but opening to show exotic florals, white stonefruits and apricots. The fruit exudes a subtle unctuousness and slipperiness, and has positive drive and underlying power. The wine following a well-managed, fine phenolic line leading to a fresh, lively, well-concentrated finish with floral and apricot notes. This is a weighty, dry Viognier with a subtle lusciousness and good power. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 3-4 years. Fruit from 60% ‘Omahu Gravels’ and 40% from ‘Waikahu’, given skin contact and 20% indigenous yeast fermented. 50% of the fermentation was in barrels, to 14.5% alc. and 2.9 g/L RS, the wine aged 4 months on lees with 30% of the wine undergoing MLF. 18.5/20 Dec 2014 RRP $19.99
