Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2010

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Dec-2011
Very deep, full, dark ruby-purple red colour, youthful in appearance. This is elegant and finely presented on bouquet with ripe black berry fruits, lifted with violetty perfumes along with black pepper and spice notes. The aromatics are balanced and harmoniously interwoven. Medium-bodied, the palate is one of elegance and finesse, with rich, sweet and lush fruit flavours, surprisingly restrained in expression. Black berry fruits with floral nuances, along with notes of pepper, are framed within a tight, fine-grained structure. The tannins supple and soft and oak is totally balanced. The aromatics and sweetness of the fruit are enhanced by fine and bright acidity which carries through to a long and sustained finish with liquorice and black pepper notes. This is an elegant and fine-textured Syrah with attractive richness to match Asian duck and pork dishes over the next 5-6+ years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Twyford' and ‘Omahu' sites in the Gimblett Gravels fermented to 14.0% alc., with 30 days on skins. The wine was aged 17 months in 40% new French oak barriques. 18.5-/20 Dec 2011 RRP $31.99
