Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Grenache 2014

Grenache from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 04-Oct-2015
Very dark, black-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has an elegantly proportioned and well-concentrated, fragrant nose with an aromatic core of ripe dark raspberries and blackberry fruit, along with violet and dark rose perfumes, subtle notes of herbs and liquorice, spices and minerals. Medium-full bodied, the palate is firmly packed with sweet and ripe flavours of blackberry and raspberry fruit lifted by dark red florals, unfolding layers of liquorice and minerals. This has considerable extract and structure, the tannins very fine-grained and flowery, lending a refined, dry mouthfeel and line. The wine carries to a densely concentrated, fine-textured, dry finish of raspberries and minerals. This is a fragrant, well-concentrated Grenache with raspberry and blackberry fruit and fine-grained tannin extraction and grip. Match with roast pork, lamb and venison over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked fruit from 1 ha from the ‘Ngakirikiri’ vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, destemmed, with 35% fermented in rotatable ‘Vernou’ 900 L cuves, the remainder fermented in open top vats and aged in 30% new barriques, to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months before blending and bottling. 18.0-/20 Oct 2015 RRP $24.99
