Villa Maria ‘Anniversary Release’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 19-Feb-2015
Full, near impenetrable black-red colour, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is full and densely concentrated with aromas of ripe, black berried fruits unfolding complex layers of iron-earth, minerals, black pepper, liquorice, tar and smoke. The aromatics are extremely intricate and interwoven and speak of the Gimblett Gravels. Fullish-bodied, the flavours of black fruits, minerals, earth, liquorice and tar are complex and deeply concentrated, with considerable richness. The fruit is encased in a fulsome, robust and immensely extracted palate. This is mouthfilling and fully textured, the tannins fine-grained and powdery, and the wine is driven by plenty of underlying power, carrying through to a very long and sustained, lingering finish of black fruits, savoury liquorice and minerals. This is an extremely complex and fully structured Syrah with layers of black fruits, iron-earth and minerals. Serve with game meat dishes and hard cheeses over the next 10-15 years. A single vineyard wine, 100% Syrah from the ‘Twyford Gravels’ site, cropped at 2.5 T/ha, fully destemmed and fermented to 14.0% alc. with hand-plunging, the wine spending 4 weeks on skins and aged 17 months in 50% new French oak barriques 19.5-/20 Feb 2015 RRP $115.00
