Vidal ‘Reserve Series’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2010

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 16-Jun-2013
Near impenetrable, dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour. The nose is elegantly proportioned and tightly concentrated with black berry fruits, black pepper and earthy minerals along with tar and spices, still bound and brooding. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours are somewhat shy and restrained, with black berries infused with black pepper, along with spices, ink and plummy notes. The mouthfeel features very fine-grained tannins at the heart allied to balanced, fresh acidity providing the palate with excellent drive and line. The flavours lead to a very long, lingering, succulent finish with flavours of dark plums, liquorice and black ink. This is a tightly bound, black-fruited Syrah with good detail and interest and a fine-grained, elegant palate. It will develop over the next 5-7 years. Match with roast lamb, beef and venison. Fruit from the ‘Omahu Gravels’ vineyard, destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in French oak 18.0+/20 Jun 2013. RRP $30.00
