Vidal ‘Reserve Series’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 16-Jun-2013
79% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% each of Malbec and Cabernet Franc from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 30% new French oak barriques. Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is elegantly intense and concentrated with a core of earthy, plummy Merlot fruit prominent, unfolding notes of mint, blackcurrant and cassis, all softly entwined. Medium-full bodied, gently mouthfilling flavours of earth, dark plums and savoury black fruits are detailed by nuances of liquorice and mint. The tannins are fine and balanced, providing positive and supple, but soft textures. The mouthfeel is enlivened by background acidity, and the flavours flow smoothly to a lingering finish of dark plums, liquorice and earth. This is a medium weighted, soft-textured Merlot-based wine with plum and earthy flavours and good underlying energy. Match with casseroles, roasted meats and semi-hard cheeses over the next 5-6 years. 18.0-/20 Jun 2013 RRP $23.00
