Vidal ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 30-Aug-2016
Full black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is firm and tightly bound with concentrated aromas of ripe black-berried fruits, plums, liquorice, spices and minerals unfolding suggestions of blue fruits and chocolate. This has depth and density. Medium-full bodied, this has a full and up-front flavour expression of ripe black fruits with plums and liquorice, along with subtle spice notes. The fruit forms a dense core and heart, with fine-grained tannin extraction in support. The acidity is soft and integrated, and the palate flows monolithically and with linearity, leading to a densely-packed, soft-textured finish with plum, pepper and chocolate nuances. This is a full, densely-packed, up-front Syrah with ripe black fruits, liquorice notes and a soft mouthfeel underlined by fine tannin extraction. 7-9 years. 100% Syrah fruit, 94% from the Omahu Gravels and 6% from the Twyford Gravels, destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 20% new French oak barrels. 18.5+/20 Sep 2016 RRP $30.00 Very dark, near impenetrable, purple-hued black-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is vibrant and bright with softly concentrated aromas of ripe blackberries entwined with Asian spices, black pepper and fine violet florals which grow in intensity with aeration. Medium-full bodied and finely presented, the fruit flavours of ripe blackberries, plums and liquorice are up-front and show good depth and intensity. Spice notes and black pepper elements emerge to add interest. The palate is juicy and plush, with supple tannins in support, and the wine flows with gentle acid tension and energy, leading to a dry finish of plums, liquorice and spices. This is an elegant, up-front and harmonious, black-fruited Syrah with liquorice and spice notes and supple, accessible tannins. Match with casseroles and game meat, or Mediterranean fare over the next 4-5 years. Syrah fruit, 94% from the Omahu Gravels and 6% from the Twyford Gravels, destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 20% new French oak barrels. 18.0/20 May 2016 RRP $24.99
