Vidal ‘Legacy Series’ Hawke’s Bay Noble Semillon 2011

Sweet Wine from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 26-Dec-2013
Bright, even, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned and tightly concentrated with aromas of citrus, tropical and stonefruits that open out in the glass, revealing honey and marmalade. The fruit has great clarity and the botrytis is very integral. Some volatile lift is present, initially, but merges with the fruit. Very sweet and unctuously textured, the mouthfeel is smooth and seamless flowing, but shows a firm and concentrated core, with a focussed, taut line. The flavours are stylish and restrained, with citrus, florals, honey, marmalade botrytis and nutty oak nuances present. Volatility lifts the flavours, and while a definite component, it allows the fruit to prevail. Excellent acidity provides balance, drive, vitality and freshness, and the palate is guided by very refined phenolics to a very long and sustained finish. This is a lively and concentrated botrytis-affected Semillon dessert wine with unctuousness and a refined palate, lifted with some volatility. Match with caramel-influenced and baked or fruit desserts over the next 7-9 years. 100% botrytis-affected Semillon, from the ‘Keltern’ vineyard in Maraekakaho, hand-picked. Foot-stomped and WBP, and barrel-fermented to 12.5% alc. and 204 g/L RS, the wine aged 8 months in 32% new French oak barriques on lees. (375 ml) 19.0-/20 Dec 2013 RRP $40.00
