Vidal Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 20-May-2016
A blend of 83% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec, the fruit 80% Gimblett Gravels and 20% Bridge Pa Triangle, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 19 months in 19% new French oak. Dark, deep, black-red colour with purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is restrained and elegant in presentation with soft, vibrant, primary fruit aromas of ripe black and dark red plums, and blackberries, revealing subtle, dark-red floral and herb fragrances and some spice nuances. Medium-bodied, the palate possesses up-front and sweet flavours of ripe blackberries and blackcurrants with dark-red plum notes, unfolding herb and curranty detail. The fruit is supported by supple tannin structure providing a fine-textured grip, and fresh, lacy acidity lending energy to the flow. Some alcoholic power is noticeable and the fine-textured line leads to a light, dry finish of currants, plums and herbs. This is an up-front, soft Merlot blend with black berried and plum fruits, herb detail, and supple, refreshing mouthfeel. Match with barbecued and grilled red meats over the next 3-4 years. 16.5/20 May 2016 RRP $15.99
