Unison ‘Classic Blend’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 11-Jul-2012
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from the ‘Unison' site, fermented to 13.5% alc. The wine was aged 20 months in oak, both barrique and large vat. Very full, near impenetrable black-hued ruby-red colour with purple hues. The aromatics are beautifully interwoven and harmonious, with layers of ripe black plums, dark spices and cedary oak, all expressed with lifted finesse and fresh vibrancy. Full-bodied, this is densely packed with mouthfilling flavours of sweetly ripe dark plum and black berry fruits, spices, liquorice and oak cedar. The flavours are multi-layered and flow seamlessly across the palate. Soft, fine tannins discreetly underline the palate and soft acidity adds to the harmony and refined textures. This has real weight, depth and extract resulting in significant structure, but the integration and balance is a highlight. The wine finishes with length, showing dark fruit and spices. This is a rich and densely structured red with interwoven and harmonious flavours. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked meat dishes over the next 10-15 years. 18.5+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $35.00
