Two Gates Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 20-Aug-2014
Dark, deep, black-hued red colour with some garnet on rim. The bouquet is concentrated with rich aromas of ripe black plum and blackcurranty fruit complexed by tar, liquorice and iron-earth notes, revealing secondary nuances of leather with aeration. Medium-full bodied, deeply concentrated flavours of savoury black plum fruit unfold layers of liquorice, earth and leather. The fruit is beginning to show secondary development. The palate is robust with grainy tannin structure and grip, and lively acidity lends energy and plenty of vitality to the mouthfeel. The flavours follow a textured line, leading to a long grainy finish with plenty of grip and savoury notes. This is a moderately robust Merlot blended red with savoury dark, plummy fruit and secondary earthy flavours. Match with game meat dishes and hard cheeses over the next 5-6+ years. 78% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, from vineyards ‘west of Hastings’, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 18.0/20  Aug 2014 RRP $31.99
