Turanga Creek ‘Down To Earth’ Merlot/Syrah 2011

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 04-Apr-2013
Full, moderately dark ruby-red colour with a good heart. The bouquet is soft and gently full with aromas of earthy dried herbs, tobacco, dark red plums and curranty fruit, revealing nuances of pepper and spices in the glass. Medium-bodied, an amalgam of flavours shows on palate, with dusty earthy, plummy fruits, cedar and tobacco, and lifted oak and spices. Firm grainy tannins provide some astringency and the acidity is prominent, adding liveliness and a mouthwatering tension. The acidity carries through to a lingering finish with black and white pepper with spicy notes adding interest. This is a grainy, sinewy and brisk red blend with earthy Merlot fruit and notes of spices and pepper. Serve with pasta, pizza, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare over the next 3-4 years. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Syrah from the Whitford vineyard, the fruit in conversion to BioGro certification, hand-picked and fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in new and seasoned French oak barrels. 16.5-/20 Apr 2013 RRP $20.00
