Trinity Hill ‘The Gimblett’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 12-Feb-2014
Very full, even, black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The bouquet is full, open and aromatic with lifted dark red florals and redcurrant fruit, along with gentle red plum and fresh herb notes. This is fragrant and has perfume. Elegant in proportion and very fine-featured, succulent and aromatic red berry fruits provide a vibrant, juicy mouthfeel. The fruit is balanced by fine tannins and fresh, lively acidity enhancing the vitality. The freshness, suppleness and aromatic nature make this deliciously approachable. It will develop over the next 5+ year. 18.5-/20 Feb 2014 39% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 9% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, and 8% Malbec from the ‘Gimblett Estate’, ‘Gimblett Stones’ and ‘Tin Shed’ sites, fermented to 12.8% alc., the wine aged 16 months in one-third new French oak barrels. Very full, deep, dark ruby-red colour, near impenetrable, with youthful purple hues. This has an elegantly proportioned nose with tightly bound, vibrant aromas of blackcurrant fruit in the cooler spectrum, showing nuances of herbs and mint with subtle oak shine. Medium-bodied, this is stylishly elegant with flavours of blackberries, blackcurrant leaf and dark herbs that show with sweetness and succulence. This is beautifully proportioned and balanced, with a concentrated core and line, the palate supported by very fine-grained tannins and lacy acidity behind the fruit. The mouthfeel is refined in texture, allowing the fruit to feature with freshness and vitality, and the flavours carry to a sustained finish. This is a classically elegant, Bordeaux-styled red wine with sweet curranty fruit and refined textures. Match with roasted red meats and semi-hard cheeses over the next 7-9 years. 18.5/20 Oct 2013 RRP $35.00
