Trinity Hill ‘Homage’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2004

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 17-Nov-2011
96% Syrah and 4% Viognier from vines planted in 1994 from the ‘Gimblett Estate', hand-picked and destemmed, fermented with a large portion of whole berries to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in new French barriques. Dark, very deep ruby-red colour, still with dome purple hues. This has a very intense nose, starting to soften with spicy, savoury dark red berry fruits along with secondary game elements, lifted with ethereal earth and herb nuances, underscored by bacon-like oak. Medium-bodied and elegant on palate, this carries sweet and sumptuous savoury red fruit, spice and game flavours with pepper lift and violet perfume hints. The tannins are refined and form a subtle core and line, leading to a long, lingering, spicy finish. This is developing complexity and will continue to age another 4-6 years easily.  Nov 2011
