The second vintage incorporating fruit from ‘The Plateau' vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels and a site in the Dartmoor Valley. Destemmed and given a cold soak, the fruit was fermented to 13.25% alc. A portion of the wine was aged 9 months in new and seasoned French oak. Very dark, deep ruby-red colour with black and purple hues. The bouquet is fine and tightly concentrated with aromas of black berry and peppery fruit, with a dusty, iron-earth and minerally edge. Medium-bodied, soft flowing flavours of spicy black fruits with pepper and liquorice form a deep core to the palate. Moderate tannin extraction underlines the fruit and combined with soft acidity, this is supple and smooth textured. Dark plums, liquorice and Asian spice flavours mark the finish. Showing dusty and earthy interest on the nose, this is an intensely flavoured, accessible Syrah for serving with spicy duck and lamb dishes over the next 4-5 years. 17.5-/20 Mar 2012 RRP $29.95
