90% Merlot and 10% Malbec, predominantly from the ‘Omahu Gravels’ vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels. Bright ruby-red colour with some depth, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is elegant with black and red curranty fruit in the cooler spectrum, showing some herbaceous stalky elements. The aromatics are fruit-focussed with notes of dark herbs and oak lift unfolding in the glass. Medium-bodied, a softly concentrated core of fruit comprising redcurrants and red plums is supported by supple and smooth tannins. The mouthfeel is harmonious and beautifully integrated and the flavours flow seamlessly. Red floral and soft herbal nuances add detail and are lifted by gentle acidity which provides an easy energy carrying the flavours to a mellow, moderately long finish. A little stalky on nose, this is a smooth, harmonious and balanced Merlot to drink with pastas, barbecued food, pork and lamb over the next 4+ years. 18.0-/20 Mar 2014 RRP $17.00
