Thornbury Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 30-Jul-2014
Dark, deep ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on edge. The bouquet is softly concentrated with well-packed aromas of dark red berry fruits, black and red cherries, savoury whole bunch herb and violetty perfumes, and liquorice and ginger-like complexing nuances. Medium-full bodied, concentrated flavours of dark berry fruits, spicy plums savoury herbs and liquorice are the feature. The fruit is framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and enlivened by the acidity and flows with positive drive. Layers of complexing spice and herb notes unfold as the wine carries through to a long finish. This is a complex Pinot Noir with spicy dark red fruits and savoury herbal fragrances framed by good structure. Match with poultry and pork over the next 5+ years. Hand-picked fruit from Bannockburn, given a cold soak and fermented to 13.5% alc. with 12% whole clusters, the wine on skins 18 days and aged 10 months in 32% new French oak. 18.5-/20 Jul 2014 RRP $29.00 Hand-picked clone 5, 6, 115, 777 and 667 fruit from the Bannockburn sub-region, given a cold soak and fermented with 12% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 18 days on skins, and aged 10 months in 32% new French oak barriques. Very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, lighter on rim. This has a very full and even bouquet of ripe black cherry and dark red berry fruits at the heart, revealing liquorice and spice elements an savoury whole-cluster interest, all harmoniously melded. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of savoury cherry and dark berry fruits are open and mouthfilling. Complex notes of whole bunch are present, with the oaking sensitively expressed. The palate has fine, grainy tannins providing the structure with some alcohol power adding drive. The mouthfeel is still a little disjointed, but has good concentration and a long lingering, fruity finish. This has the potential to come together very well with great interest over the next 5-6+ years. Harmonious on bouquet, this Pinot Noir is fruity and has the structure to develop. Serve with duck, pork and hare. 18.5/20 Mar 2014 RRP $29.00
