Thorn-Clarke ‘Sandpiper’ Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia - South Australia
Review Date : 24-Apr-2016
Very full, very dark, black-hued red with garnet on the rim. The nose is elegant with intense and softly concentrated aromas of blackcurrants and cassis entwined with layers of mint and eucalypt and chocolatey detail. This has varietal clarity in the expression. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of blackcurrant, cassis, fresh herbs and eucalypt are soft, but densely packed, forming a weighty core. The fruit is encased by soft, supple, but substantial tannin structure. The palate grows in grip and dryness as it carries to a lingering finish of blackcurrants and mint. This is a softly packed Cabernet Sauvignon with blackcurrant and minty flavours and a full, well-extracted mouthfeel. Match with herb-marinated lamb and beef dishes over the next 4+ years. Fruit from ‘St Kitts’, ‘Milton Park’ and ‘Kabininge’, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10-12 months in French oak. 17.0/20 Apr 2016 RRP AU$19.00 Fruit from ‘St Kitts’, ‘Milton Park’ and ‘Kabininge’ in the Barossa, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in French oak. Very dark, black-red colour, near impenetrable, with ruby hues on the rim. The nose is tightly packed with firm and concentrated aromas of ripe blackcurrants and cassis liqueur, along with soft mint herb and leafy detail. This has varietal purity and austerity. Medium-full bodied, the palate features a sweetly rich heart of pure blackcurrant and cassis fruit flavours. Some mint herb and a suggestion of leaf show. The fruit is underlined by soft, grainy textures and ripe acid liveliness. The flavours are open but have a deep core and line that leads to a long, elegant finish with soft blackcurrant nuances. This is a classical Cabernet Sauvignon with pure blackcurrant flavours on a balanced, accessible palate. Match with roast lamb and with hard cheeses over the next 5-6 years. 17.5/20 Nov 2015 RRP AUS$19.00
