The Regent of Tantallon ‘Limited Edition’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 12-Mar-2015
77% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Syrah, mainly from the ‘Tantallon’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 21 days on skins and aged 60 months in oak, a small percentage new. Dark, black-red colour with lighter garnet hues on rim. This has a soft, full and concentrated bouquet of ripe dark red berry and plum fruit, complexed by secondary savoury herb, undergrowth, earth and game elements. The aromatics are layered by smoky, cedary oak with pencil-box notes and some volatile lift. Medium-full bodied, ripe black plum and black berry fruit flavours are layered with complex earth and cedary oak. The fruit is supported by fine, grainy tannins and textures, lending a little robustness to the mouthfeel. The structure and fruit sweetness is balanced and carries to a long, dry, oaky finish. This is a fulsome black-fruited Merlot/Cabernet blend with some secondary detail and plenty of structure and cedary oak flavours. Match with roasted game meat and hard cheeses over the next 7-8 years. 18.0/20 Mar 2015 RRP $40.00
