Terrace Edge Waipara Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 09-May-2011
Very dark, deep, near-saturated black-red with purple hues, this has a dense, full nose of spicy black fruits, game meat and toasty oak as well as complex nuances of dried herbs. Full bodied, this combines spicy, gamey black fruits, black pepper and toasty oak, along with a hint of reduction interest with fresh, juicy, mouthwatering acidity and soft tannin backbone. Nuances of dark florals and pepper emerge with time in the glass. Fruit from two small blocks, one on a terrace overlooking the Waipara River, the other on a steep slope, vines 6-7 years old, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 25% new French barriques. Syrah has become a special project for the Chapman family and this is the best vintage yet. Serve with casseroles, lamb shanks or venison over the next 4-6 years. 18.0/20 May 2011 RRP $26.50 Disclaimer: This wine is distributed by ‘Wine2Trade', the company under which ‘Raymond Chan Wine Reviews' operates
