Te Mata ‘Woodthorpe’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernets 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 02-Aug-2011
This is 46% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 19 months in French oak. Dark, deep, ruby-red colour, this combines fragrant, lifted and ripe, red berry fruit and floral aromatics of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon along with earthy Merlot. The oaking is very subtle and hardly noticeable on bouquet. Medium-bodied, this has densely concentrated, ripe dark fruit flavours that are a little shy. Yet there is excellent acidity providing fine tension and an underlying freshness that shows the wines youth. Fine-grained tannins follow the palate line to a sustained finish and enable approachability, but this will develop over the next 4-6+ years.  Aug 2011
