Te Mata ‘Woodthorpe’ Hawke’s Bay Gamay Noir 2011

This has a light garnet-red colour. Being bottled just 10 days ago, the wine may yet darken up. Tightly bound, but distinctly bubble-gum esters lifted with juicy confectionary and red-fruited berries, with floral perfumes on nose, this shows the 66% carbonic maceration component. The palate is where it comes together with its tight vinosity and presence. The fruit is a little shy at present, but this has tension and vitality, with good acidity underpinning the palate. Tending fruit-driven, 12.5% alc., and softly textured for accessibility but with a core and depth to unfold, this can be seen as a Beaujolais-Villages equivalent.  Aug 2011
