Te Mata ‘Estate Vineyards’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-Nov-2014
Straw-yellow colour, with some depth. This has an elegant nose of savoury yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits and subtle layers of nutty lees and oak emerging in the glass. Some interest and the beginnings of development are showing. On palate, more up-front with attractively ripe grapefruit flavours, with mealy and nutty oak, along with some spiciness. The richness of the mouthfeel grows and there is good weight and roundness, with very fine textures and some power in the background. The flavours become more elegant on finish. This is starting to hit its straps and will show more over the next 3+ years. Fruit from the Woodthorpe Terraces, Bridge Pa Triangle and Havelock Hills, with partial WBP, barrel-fermentation to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months, with a portion undergoing MLF in barrel. 18.0/20 Nov 2014 RRP $20.00 Very pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The bouquet is broad, but restrained with aromas of ripe white stonefruits, citrus fruits along with nuances of butterscotch MLF, minerals and nuts. Medium-bodied, the flavours are tightly bound and restrained, yet the palate has good richness of mouthfeel and lively, crisp acidity. Flavours of white stonefruits are melded with butterscotch MLF, forming a clean amalgam and line. Fine and smooth textures carry the flavours to a good finish. This is a restrained and tightly bound Chardonnay that will open up over the next 4+ years. Fruit from the Woodthorpe Terraces, Bridge Pa Triangle and Havelock Hills districts with partial WBP, barrel-fermentation and 50% MLF. 13.5% alc. 17.5/20 Mar 2014 RRP $19.90
