Te Mata ‘Elston’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Mar-2015
Brilliant light straw-yellow colour with golden hues at the heart. The nose is soft and restrained initially with a tight core of citrus fruit and yellow stonefruits along with balance nutty interest. With aeration, layers of stonefruit richness, nutty and minerally lees and oak toast unfold , building to fill the bouquet with plenty of detail and nuance. Medium-full bodied, the palate is still tightly bound with a firm core and linear flow. Citrus fruits, yellow stonefruits, mealy and nutty elements emerge, with minerals toast and cream building to enrich the palate. This is fine-textured and elegant in concentration with integrated acidity lending the energy to drive the wine to a very long, packed finish. This is still tightly held, but will show its potential and class over the next 5-6 years. Fruit WBP and full barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in approx. one-third new French oak on lees, undergoing MLF. 19.0-/20 Mar 2015 RRP $35.00 Bright, light lemony-gold in colour. The nose is refined and tightly bound with stoneftuit, citrus fruit, mealy, nutty elements, and oak spices forming a concentrated core. Fine detail and complexing savoury, creamy nuances unfold, and the richness of fruit becomes apparent with some aeration. Medium to medium-full bodied, softly concentrated flavours of grapefruit and yellow stonefruits are melded with nuts and biscuits and a hint of lemon curd. The flavours grow and bloom through the mid-palate. A fine line of acidity with the finest textures guide the palate to a lush, richly concentrated and lingering finish. This changes and grows with air time. 5-6 years. Hand-picked fruit, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in new and seasoned oak with lees contact and 100% MLF. 19.0-/20 Nov 2014 RRP $35.00 Very pale straw colour. The nose is initially tight and unformed, but opens to reveal ripe white peach and floral aromas with subtle interwoven nutty barrel work and minerally notes. The nose exudes finesse and class and a little exoticism. Shy in expression, the palate has presence and vinous drive, unfolding concentrated white stonefruit and citrussy fruit. Nuts, mineral, florals emerge, with sweetness and fine flowing textures. Layers of detail grow to complete the palate, enhancing the fruit extract, and the wine leads to a long, lingering finish. At present still to show its best, but the potential is clear. 5-7 years ahead. 19.0-/20 Jul 2014 RRP $33.50
