Te Mata ‘Bullnose’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 04-Mar-2016
Dark, very deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour. This has a very tightly bound, deeply concentrated bouquet of ripe black berried fruits and black plums, entwined with aromas of iron-earth and minerals, black pepper and Oriental spices, unfolding suggestions of violet florals. The aromatics are somewhat closed at present. Medium-full bodied, the palate is densely packed with a firm core, showing ripe black berried and plum fruit flavours along with black pepper and spices. Notes of minerals and mocha add detail. The aromatic profile is somewhat shy in expression. The fruit is supported by fulsome, ripe tannins lending plenty of underlying structure and presence to the mouthfeel. The wine flows to a strong, solid finish. This has power and ripeness, but is in a subdued phase. It will emerge and develop over the next 8+ years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Bullnose’ vineyard, hand-picked, destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 35% new French oak. 19.0-/20 Mar 2016 RRP $N/A Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is rich and aromatic unfolding ethereal waves of ripe dark red and black berry fruits lifted with floral perfumes and exotic spice notes. Layers of pepper, earth and toasty oak add complexity. The nose is harmoniously interwoven and complete in presentation. Medium-bodied and elegant, rich, succulently juicy fruit flavours of dark red and black berried fruit are lifted by violet and red florals, and melded with black pepper, spices and oak. The palate is supple and plush with fine-grained tannins underlining the flavours, which flow with plenty of energy and drive. The finesse and richness of exotic flavours is carried to a very long, lingering finish. This is a sensational, complete Syrah of richness and finesse. 5-7+ years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Bullnose’ vineyard, hand-picked, destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in new and seasoned French oak. 19.5/20 Mar 2015 RRP $49.00 Very dark, deep, black-hued purple red colour. This has a fine and intensely concentrated nose of aromatic black and red berry fruits infused with violet floral essences. Nuances of black pepper, spice and oak toast add detail to the array of perfumes. The fruit richness and opulence is refined and perfect in restraint. Medium to medium-full bodied, sweetly ripe and luscious flavours of dark red berryfruit, notes of red plums and violet florals unfold black pepper and Asian spice interest. Fine oak shine adds lift. The fruit extract is startling, as is the suppleness of the very fine tannin extraction. This has great drive and concentration allied to finesse and richness. The wine flows to a long aromatic finish with liquorice and florals. 7-10 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Bullnose’ vineyard, destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. 19.5/20 RRP Nov 2014 $49.00
