Te Awanga Estate Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 26-Sep-2014
Bright, full, even straw-yellow colour, lighter on edge. The nose is restrained and shy, but shows fresh white stonefruit and savoury citrus fruit aromas, along with creamy barrel-ferment layers, and nuances of spicy, nutty oak and lemon curd MLF. Medium-full bodied, this has excellent depth and mouthfeel presence, with concentrated white stonefruits, nutty oak and flinty complexities harmoniously melded forming a strong and firm, but rounded core. The mouthfeel features fine, dry textures with ripe acidity in the background and the flavours flow with drive and power to a substantial finish with concentrated bitter stonefruit pith notes. This is a powerful and concentrated Chardonnay with restrained and brooding flavours that will unfold into richness and complexity over the next 4-5+ years. Serve with roasted poultry, pork, veal and hare. Mendoza and clone 15 from the ‘Te Awanga’ estate, from vines 10-17 y.o., hand-picked, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques, the wine undergoing batonnage and partial MLF conversion. 18.0+/20 Sep 2014 RRP $24.99
