Tantalus Voile Reserve Syrah 2017, Waiheke Island

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 31-Jul-2023
Moderately deep ruby-red with a tinge of garnet, lighter on the rim. It has a composed, attractive bouquet packed with red plum, dried red berries, an amalgam of spice, leather and herbs. Medium-full bodied, aromas of red plum, dried strawberry entwined with pepper, nutmeg, liquorice, unfolding leather and lifted herbaceous aromas. The acidity is integrated, flows with poise, softened fine-grained tannins, and fragranced spice lingered on a sustained finish. This Syrah shows an elegant, evolved red fruit core with spice layers, leather and integrated silky tannins and fine acid tension. Match with pork ribeye and lamb chops over the next 5 years. Handpicked Syrah and a small percentage of Viognier, fermented in stainless steel open-top fermenters with indigenous and selected yeasts to 13.5% alc. Basket pressed to primarily new French oak for 12 months of ageing, no fining. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) July 2023 RRP $95
