Tantalus Voile Reserve Syrah 2016, Waiheke

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 10-Jun-2021
Deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The bouquet is full and expressive, well-packed aromas of amalgam spices, liquorice roots, violets with a whiff of medicinal herbs intermix with a black fruit core. Full-bodied, red berries melded with blackberries and black currants; black pepper, liquorice unfolds with smoky element and dried herbs. Fine-grained tannin contributes to a firm and silky grip; bright acidity leads a vibrant flow to linearity with a floral closing. At 5 years old, the wine is incredibly youthful, red and black-fruited with alluring herbal elements and a firm and chewy tannin backbone. Match with Beef Wellington and lamb stew over the next 8+ years. Handpicked, co-fermented with viognier in stainless steel open-top fermenters with indigenous and selected yeasts to 14% alc, aged in Fench oak for 12 months. No fining. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) June 2021 RRP $90
