Tantalus Evoque Reserve Merlot/ Cabernets/ Malbec 2016, Waiheke

Blended Red from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 10-Jun-2021
Deep ruby-black and a lighter garnet rim. The nose is full and robust with enticing nuances of ripe berries, plums interweave mint, cloves and cardamon, underlying new leather, deep floral and cedar. Full-bodied, integrated aromas of mellowed berries and plums have a good core, menthol intermix violets, cloves and cardamon, complexing cocoa, new leather and cedar hang on for a long finish. The wine has integrated harmoniously, supported by a savoury acid line. Softened fine-grained tannin provides a smooth grip, guild the palate with spices and cedar. This is a complex, integrated Merlot, Cabernets and Malbec blend at a brilliant drinking window now. Match with beef bourguignon and slow-cooked lamb shoulder over the next 5+ years. Fermented in stainless steel open-top fermenters with indigenous and selected yeasts to 13.5% alc, aged in Fench oak for 12 months, primarily new. No fining. 19/20 pts (95 pts) June 2021 RRP $90
